Can you trade out one or both of the switches for a Dimmer

by Mike Splan

I am referring to your typical three-way switch diagram. My Question is.., can you trade out one or both of the switches for a Dimmer? Now I don't know if it matters, but the house is 50 years old. All circuits were originally for incandescent. I am switching all the light bulbs to Dimmable LED. Will this work? Am I reaching for too much?

Mike,

You certainly can. You must use 3-way Dimmer switch though. You can't just use an ordinary 2-way dimmer on a 3-way circuit. Use a 3-way dimmer on ONLY ONE OF THE 3-WAY switches in a given 3-way circuit, you can't change both 3-way switches. Again, ONLY ONE. Therefore just by following my 3-way circuit diagrams you can swap out those old switches and wire the new ones in the exact same fashion wire-by-wire. Please pay attention to the common wire on each switch and be sure to NOT get them mixed up.

Hope this helps and thanks for commenting.
